Jack is a final year PhD student with a focus on material science, surface engineering, and contact mechanics. He graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a Meng in Mechanical Engineering in 2018. Jack’s interests in material science, tribology, and surface engineering stem from his master’s project at Chalmer’s University, Gothenburg. There he worked closely with the Swedish Olympic luge team and studied the contact mechanics of ice to steel interactions involved in Luge sled blades.
His PhD project initially explored the fabrication and mechanical behaviour of micro-structured interfaces. This research enabled the development of interfaces with repeatable and tailored contact stiffness properties. Jack has subsequently investigated various avenues of surface fabrication and manufacture, leading to a current focus on developing a research tool for rough surface generation and replication.
